Amy BeashelAgent: Hannah Sheppard
When a primary school teacher told Amy Beashel her creative writing was neat but not very interesting, she took the critique seriously, vowing never to write about watching Neighbours or lining up for the bus home again.
Having previously written food and pregnancy blogs, Amy began her debut novel in the too-short hours when her small children were sleeping and her husband was obsessing with box sets. Thank goodness for Calpol and Netflix. Inspired by the books she read for GCSE, in which she and her mum would always look for female characters finding their own self worth, Amy now writes about young women discovering just that. The Sky Is Mine is a novel about finding your voice, about finding the 'no', when your words have been lost to mouths and to bodies and to hands bigger and stronger than yours, which are bound. By silence. By loyalty. By fear. Sadly, Amy’s writing desk is never as tidy as her Year 5 exercise book. Amy's debut novel, The Sky Is Mine, was published by Rock the Boat (Oneworld) in 2020. |
