Michael SmithAgent: Natalie Galustian
Michael Smith is an English writer, broadcaster and film-maker. He was born and brought up in Hartlepool, County Durham and graduated from University College London.
He began writing by producing a series of pamphlets (which quickly became collectors' items), which he later developed in to the The Giro Playboy, followed by Shorty Loves Wing Wong, a prequel to The Giro Playboy featuring art by Jim Medway. Both these books were preceded by collectable limited editions, published by Simon Finch and To Hell With Publishing. The Simon Finch edition pulled together the early The Giro Playboy pamphlets and an album of readings, set to music by collaborator Flora, and packaged it in a hand-stencilled pizza box. Shorty Loves Wing Wong was accompanied by an exhibition of Jim Medway's artwork at London's Paul Stopper gallery. Unreal City, Smith's third Faber book was issued as a limited edition with an accompanying album of readings with music by Andrew Weatherill. Michael's work has been collected in anthologies including Oysteropolis, in On Nature and extracts from The Giro Playboy were serialised in Reactions 5: New Poetry. He is currently working on a series of short films on the uncanny natures and histories of English coastal towns called Stranger on the Shore. Smith has also written features for the Guardian and the Observer, The Idler, Zembla, and Fire & Knives, as well as regular columns for magazines Dazed and Confused, Good For Nothing and Bare Bones / Le Gun. |
