The debut YA, and Costa-shortlisted novel from Darren Charlton, Wranglestone, has a brand new cover (illustrated by Karl J. Mountford), coming soon, and we couldn't love it any more.

This is an action-packed and thought-provoking book for fans of Patrick Ness and Marcus Sedgwick

The book was also selected by both The Times and Observer as one of their top books of 2020.

In anticipation of its release on 22nd July 2021, Gollancz have released a trailer for Adam Simcox's debut novel, The Dying Squad.

You can catch the full trailer here.

We were delighted to see both Femi Kayode and David Fennell's upcoming debuts Lightseekers and The Art of Death, respectively, listed in Crime Fiction Lover's 'On the Radar' column. If you'd like to see more details on these incredible books, plus others on the list, click this link.

Later this week sees the release of Georgia Kaufmann's sweeping historical debut, The Dressmaker of Paris. The blog tour has begun (make sure you're following the hashtag #TheDressmakerOfParis to see all the reviews coming in - and they're pretty smashing), and in addition, MyWeekly reviewed the book in their latest issue:

"Spanning time and the globe, this is a historical novel with a difference, following Rosa Kusstatscher's journey to global fashion icon. Delicious descriptions of Chanel perfume bottles and cultural references combine to add sparkle. Ideal for fans of Fiona Valpy."

The paperback of Liberation, the true story of WW2 heroine Nancy Wake, co-written by client Imogen Robertson, was released this week.

Nancy Wake was a soldier who led a battalion of 7,000 French Resistance fighters who called her Field Marshall. Who had a 5-million Franc bounty on her head. Who killed a Nazi with her bare hands. Who defeated 22,000 Germans with the loss of only 100 men. Who sold her medals because, "I'll probably go to hell and they'd melt anyway."

Also published this week, was the paperback for Ragnar Jónasson's new, and final, Dark Iceland thriller, starring Ari Thor, Winterkill.

Chilling, claustrophobic and disturbing, Winterkill is a startling addition to the multi-million-copy bestselling Dark Iceland series and cements Jónasson as one of the most exciting and acclaimed authors in crime fiction.

A couple of international sales made us happy this week:

Jo Thomas' romantic Grecian adventure, The Honey Farm on the Hill, was sold to Era in Bulgaria.

Both The Curator and the forthcoming Dead Ground by M. W. Craven were sold to Denmark's Jentas.

Finally, we are welcoming a new author to DHH this week.

Thomas D. Lee, who joins Harry Illingworth's list, writes novels about folklore and climate breakdown, often at the same time. He believes all sorts of things about how art and literature can be used as tools to fight for a better future, but mostly he just wants to make his readers laugh.

He holds a BA in History and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester, where he is currently studying for a PhD.

Thomas is currently working on his debut novel, The Matter of Britain.

Excitement abound this week, as finished copies of Femi Kayode's forthcoming debut novel, Lightseekers, landed with us.

The first in the new series, featuring investigative psychologist, Philip Taiwo, will be published by Bloomsbury Raven next month.

In addition, the book was included in Goodreads' '75 Debut Novels to Discover in 2021' - to see the full list, click here.

More finished copies arrived this week - the debut adult crime novel by David Fennell, The Art of Death (February 2021, Zaffre Books).

This is the beginning of a gripping new series, set in London, with DI Grace Archer at the helm. Perfect for fans of Chris Carter, M. W. Craven and Alex North (The Whisper Man).

We were delighted to see a new endorsement for this fab page-turner, from Susi Holliday:

"A serial killer classic in the making, The Art of Death is neatly plotted, perfectly paced and brilliantly characterised with a clever concept that hooks you in and holds you tight, right up to the extremely satisfying final page."

Congratulations to Stephen Moss, whose book The Swallow: A Biography, has been shortlisted for the Richard Jeffries / White Horse Bookshop Prize.

Victoriocity, the podcast created and hosted by clients Chris and Jen Sugden was recommended on BBC Radio 4's Front Row this week: "It's like if you put Sherlock Holmes in a blender with Dickens and strained it through a Terry Pratchett filter - the result is a whole lot of fun." If you're looking for a new podcast to get stuck into, look no further.

Additionally, Murmurs, the BBC audio drama Chris and Jen wrote an episode of, has been shortlisted for the BBC Audio Awards. Congratulations, both!

Una-Mary Parker's The Granville Sisters is included in Apple's UK's 'Free First in a Series' promo, running 11th - 26th January. If you're an Apple Books customer (UK-based), then the first in this gorgeous, glamorous series, packed with familial drama, is absolutely free.

Two glorious covers had their reveals this week:

Jo Thomas' Chasing the Italian Dream is the *perfect* getaway book during a time when we can but only dream of such things. This is a deliciously feel-good story about making your dreams come true, set in sun-kissed southern Italy (May 2021, Transworld).

The Caravan at the Edge of Doom, the debut children's novel by Jim Beckett, is a magical, action-packed adventure, perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett and David Walliams (May 2021, Egmont).

Happy New Year, everyone! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and enjoyed a mince or pie or twelve (we know we certainly did...).

We're back & raring to go with a the first DHH News Roundup of 2021, comprising of news form the latter end of 2020 and the first week back in this brand new year. So, without further ado, let us dive straight in...
Picture
We welcomed two new clients to the Agency over the break.

Heather Darwent was one of Emily Glenister's pitchers during our December 2020 #PitchDHH event. Emily instantly fell in love with Heather's dark and upmarket commercial suspense novel, The Things We Do To Our Friends (think The Secrets History x The Furies x My Dark Vanessa). Welcome, Heather!

In addition to Heather, we are delighted to welcome Kathleen Whyman, also to Emily's list. Like Heather, Kathleen took part in our Pitch DHH session in December and won Emily over with her humorous upmarket women's fiction book, The Second Wife Syndrome - if you like Mhairi McFarlane and Marian Keyes, then Kathleen will be right up your street. Stay tuned for more news on this exciting signing soon.

Ragnar Jónasson's The Darkness was announced as Germany's no.3 bestselling paperback of 2020, on the Der Spiegel list. An extraordinary accomplishment, congratulations Ragnar.

Additionally, Ragnar's forthcoming standalone crime thriller, The Girl Who Died was selected as one of The Times' 'Books To Look Out For In 2021'. We cannot wait for this gloriously moody, Scandi-Noir to hit shelves in April later this year.

A couple of Stuart Turton international rights deals specials:
  • The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle has been sold to Politiken in Denmark, making it the 35th territory for this mind-bending debut
  • Also by Stuart Turton, The Devil and the Dark Water has had Slovakian rights sold to Slovensky in Slovakia

Congratulations, Stuart!

Over the Christmas break, Stuart was interviewed by Suffolk Libraries and you can catch up with the piece here.

Finally, Stuart wrote an article for The Times focused on the grim tale of the Batavia shipwreck that inspired his second novel. It really is a fascinating read so if you have a subscription, click here to read more.

The Accidental Countryside by Stephen Moss, was selected by National Geographic as one of their '6 Spring Reads', the perfect way to spend some time outdoors whilst being cooped up indoors.

Also over the Christmas break, we were delighted to see the Express run a promotion for all four of Mike Hollow's four Blitz Detective books (The Blitz Detective, The Canning Town Murder, The Custom House Murder and The Stratford Murder).

The series, starring Inspector John Jago, is set in WW2 London.

Happy Publication Day to Adam Hamdy for the paperback of Black 13, a high-stakes espionage thriller; Abi Elphinstone for the Everdark paperback (prequel to Abi's magically whimsical The Unmapped Chronicles series), and Mandy Robotham for the paperback of The Berlin Girl, a female-led, emotionally-charged story set in WW2.

To celebrate the publication, Mandy wrote a short story in S magazine: The Huntress and also an article for this week's Daily Express on the female reporters who broke some of the biggest stories during World War Two, despite almost everything being against them. Just before pressing 'post' on this roundup, we received the excellent news that The Berlin Girl has climbed to #8 on the Globe and Mail's Hardcover Fiction bestseller list!

Finally, it was wonderful to see Femi Kayode's forthcoming debut novel, Lightseekers (February 2021, Bloomsbury Raven), recommended in multiple publications / platforms:

  • Goodreads '36 of the Most Anticipated Mysteries and Thrillers of 2021'
  • The Independent 'Best books to look out for in 2021'
  • Metro 'Top Eight Gripping New Novels That Are Coming Out In 2021'
  • Cosmopolitan '69 New Books by Black and POC Authors Out In 2021'

Lightseekers, featuring investigative psychologist Dr. Philip Taiwo, is the start of a new series that begins with the gripping tale of the mystery of three young students who are brutally murdered in a Nigerian university town, killings that are captured on social media.
