The cover for Sara MacDonald's next sweeping and beautiful story, The Long Road from Kandahar (May 2022, HarperCollins) has been revealed, along with a couple of pre-publication endorsement:
Picture
The hand of friendship can span a thousand miles...

Pakistan

Among the almond orchards of the Swat Valley, Zamir tends goats with his son, Raza. He must make a heartbreaking decision if he is to protect his youngest child from the Taliban.

Afghanistan
On a military base in Lashkar Gah, Ben lives on edge, wondering if his family will be the next to receive life-changing news from the front line.

Cornwall
And in a ramshackle house on the Cornish coast, Ben’s mother Delphi, an artist, offers a refuge to her grandson Finn, as he retreats from the changes he senses in his family.
When Raza and Finn, two boys from impossibly different worlds, meet, they are united by their loneliness. But will their unexpected bond be enough to save not just each other, but also their families, just as all their lives are about to change forever?
- -
"The Long Road from Kandahar is a novel that is at once heartbreaking and uplifting, and its focus on the themes of war and loss, love and friendship across cultures is both topical and timeless: a powerful story from a writer operating at the height of her powers."
Jane Johnston

"Interweaving the devastation exacted by war on the lives of two boys ... this blistering story shows how no one is remote, connecting rural Cornwall with the Swat Valley of Pakistan."
Georgia Kaufmann

The newly released debut from Tom Hindle, A Fatal Crossing, has been selected by Waterstones as one of their 'Golden Age' picks. You can get your very own copy here.

Ragnar Jónasson's latest chilly offering, Outside (April 2022, Michael Joseph) has been favourably reviewed by Kirkus Reviews:

"The ptarmigan hunt four old friends have planned for a winter weekend in the wilds of eastern Iceland goes south when the weather turns on them and they turn on each other ... A shivery delight. It’s nice that the Icelandic Tourist Board hasn’t paid Jónasson to quit publishing."

Another cover reveal for you: this time, for Phillipa Ashley's new southwestern delight, A Golden Cornish Summer (June 2022, Avon):

Under the golden Cornish sun, buried treasure and family secrets will change Emma’s life forever…

Emma loved her life in the seaside village of Silver Cove. But when the discovery of sunken treasure ignited a feud between her family and that of Luke, her first love, everything fell apart. Heartbroken and betrayed, she fled.

Now, as she wades into the sparkling surf for the first time in fifteen years, she remembers everything she loved about this beautiful place. Then a huge wave knocks her off her feet. Wet and dripping, Emma is rescued by none other than Luke – who is, to her dismay, even more handsome than ever.

Emma starts to wonder if returning home was a huge mistake. Or could the real treasure have been waiting here for her all along?

Sarah Bonner's debut, Her Perfect Twin (published last week) has picked up some fantastic reviews in the last seven days, and we couldn't wait to share them:

"In a twist on the he said / she said trope, Her Perfect Twin is split into five parts, with multiple protagonists and differing viewpoints. Bonner cleverly avoids repetition in the various narratives and the result is a compelling read, surely destined for the screen. Harlan Coben meets Liz Nugent in a thrilling tale of deadly deceit."
Irish Sunday Independent

"A twisted tale I could not have loved more."
The Sun

"A perfect thriller, we read this in one sitting!"
Closer

"A perfect twisty thriller."
Bella

"Lockdown novels tend to be a bit Marmite - although this one does up with a dilemma that would probably have floored Jonathan Van-Tam at a press conference ... convincing and entertaining."
Daily Mail

Richard Swan's forthcoming debut, The Justice of Kings, has sold to the following territories recently:

  • Czech Republic: Host
  • Poland: MAG
  • Russia: Eksmo

These rights join Spain (Trini Vergara Ediciones) and Germany (Host).

Richard Swan's forthcoming debut novel, The Justice of Kings (February 2022, Orbit), has received two further excellent endorsements:

"A fascinating look at justice, vengeance and the law - great characters, compelling and wonderfully written. A brilliant debut and fantastic start to the series."
James Islington, author of The Licanius Trilogy

"The Justice of Kings is utterly compelling, thoroughly engrossing and written with such skilful assurance I could barely put it down. The characters feel so real I swear I suffered every horror and hangover alongside them, and their world - though we just see the smallest portion of it here - feels vastly complex, poised on the brink of a disaster I can't wait to watch unfold!"
Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

Today (Monday 17th January 2022) at 4pm, Henrietta Heald will be talking with The IET Bookshelf about her book, Magnificent Women and their Revolutionary Machines.

The interview will be broadcast on YouTube and will be available to watch here.

We were very pleased to see this new review for Mike Hollow's The Pimlico Murder, the sixth in his Detective John Jago series, set in London during WW2:

"The author writes with precision and narrative ability, and the fundamental decency and lonely vulnerability of the character of DI Jago continues to appeal … fully recommended as well-written excellent historical fiction."
Historical Novels Review

Picture
Last week, Ragnar Jónasson appeared on BBC World Service, to discuss Agatha Christie, and how her novels helped shaped his own. Catch up here.

His most recent book, Outside, will be published in April 2022.

Our thanks to acclaimed author Chris Whitaker who last week gave this brilliant quote for Brian McGilloway's forthcoming novel, The Empty Room (March 2022, Constable Books):

"A searing, thrilling and heartbreaking look at life, loss and revenge, expertly handled by a hugely talented storyteller."

"The Justice of Kings is a brilliant book 1, with intrigue, excellent character arcs, a brutal magic system, and a story I just could not put down ... needs to be in every dark fantasy fan’s TBR pile for 2022."
Grimdark Magazine

"Murder mystery meets grimdark political fantasy in this first of a trilogy ... An intriguingly dark (and realistically depressing) deconstruction of a beloved mystery trope."
Kirkus Reviews

"Sherlock Holmes with swords and magic. Bloody marvellous and a real page turner."
Mike Shackle

"A gritty, gripping tale of a young man searching for meaning in a life that's far from ordinary."
Malcolm Duffy

"Emotionally complex, dark and clever - a very unexpected, thoughtful and original book. I can honestly think of no other YA book quite like it."
Gina Blaxill

"Staggeringly good, this richly complex novel by James Goodhand is as accomplished and engrossing as his debut ... Page-turning and compelling, Goodhand deftly handles a narrative that seems to be moving inexorably towards some terribly disaster ... In tears and awe by the final pages, James Goodhand had me hanging on every word. I loved it!"
Louisa Reid

"The House at Helygen is a chilling, unforgettable, historical drama with as many twists and turns as the leading estate has corridors. A beautiful and brutal illustration of family decay that had me second guessing all of my suspicions until the very end. Block out a day in your calendar for this one because you won’t be able to put it down!"
Karin Nordin

"[A] haunting and emotional read, one that had me thinking over the characters for days afterwards."
Lisa Hall

"It's got everything going in a historical fiction drama."
Clare Whitfield

"Full of atmosphere, Return to Blackwater House builds and builds to its shocking climax. I could not predict the twists and turns in the slightest, but everything comes together in a satisfying conclusion. Claustrophobic, emotional, suspenseful and packed full of twists, I really enjoyed this fantastic thriller!"
Sarah A. Denzil

"Every womxn should read this. On the surface it's a beautifully-written, haunting and intriguing psychological thriller. Dive deeper and it is about sisterhood in all its aspects. I knew from that incredible opening that I was going to love it."
Barbara Copperthwaite

"Return To Blackwater House will keep you up far too late at night...prepare to be twisted and turned as you desperately keep reading to find out what happens next!"
Sarah Lawton

"I loved this atmospheric, emotionally-charged novel about the secrets within families and the pull of the past. I wanted to savour the characters and the vivid Cornish setting at the same time as being desperate to turn the pages to find out the answer to the mystery! A dark, compelling, moving read from start to finish."
Helen Cooper

"I cannot stop thinking about this book, from the moment I started reading it the characters occupied my thoughts and I found myself wondering what secrets they held and what was about to be revealed. Return to Blackwater House treats the reader to deeply drawn characters, a wild and atmospheric setting, and the perfect blend of a slow burn suspense and page-turning thriller."
S. V. Leonard

"I tore through this dark, twisty thriller that dripped with menace from page one and built to a shocking yet satisfying climax. A must read for 2022."
Sophie Flynn

Marina Palmer's forthcoming crime thriller, The Russian Doll, was selected in Woman's Best Books of the Week.

Out on the 20th January, Sarah Bonner's debut novel, Her Perfect Twin was selected by Red magazine as one of the 10 new books for this month:

"This is as twisty and twisted a thriller as anyone could ever want. The surprises and the suspense just keep on coming."

The most recent psychological thriller from Carys Jones, We Are All Liars, was included in Woman's Own's most recent Book Club:

Who can you trust when everyone is a liar? A group of five lifelong friends have a reunion in a remote Scottish cabin, hoping to rekindle their increasingly fragile relationships. They're each hiding something, harmless fibs that have ballooned into terrible secrets. When one of the girls is found dead after a snowstorm, a life-or-death race begins to escape the mountain - and each other. A sinister psychological thriller about toxic friendships.
