Picador has landed a “thrilling” work of dystopian fiction from debut novelist Sarah Jackson.
Commissioning editor Gillian Fitzgerald-Kelly acquired world all language rights, excluding the US, for Not Alone from Harry Illingworth at DHH Literary Agency. US rights were pre-empted by Carolyn Williams at Doubleday from the Helen Edwards Rights Agency. It will be published in the UK and US simultaneously in spring 2023.

The publisher explained: “Set in contemporary Britain, Not Alone tells the story of Katie and Harry, a mother and son who are fighting for survival in a world devastated by a toxic storm. Spending her days foraging outside for what is still safe to eat, Katie must protect her son at all costs from a world in which stepping outside could cost you your life. However, after years of exposure, Katie thinks she might be getting sick. And she must find someone to look after Harry. When their peaceful world is punctured by the arrival of another survivor, Katie learns that the man she was meant to marry might still be out there. Setting off together, Katie and Harry emerge into a changed—yet beautiful—world for the first time, beginning a desperate journey into the unknown.”

Fitzgerald-Kelly said: “I am thrilled to welcome Sarah Jackson and her breathtaking debut novel to the Picador list. I was gripped from its opening pages and felt desperate to publish this heart-stopping and deeply moving story of family, grief and the things we will do to save the people we love the most. This excitement was immediately shared across the publishing teams who cannot wait to press this fantastic book into people’s hands.”

Jackson is an author and ecologist with a keen interest in human-wildlife coexistence, conservation, climate change and microplastics pollution. She studied psychology and criminology at Cardiff University before deciding to do a Masters in conservation ecology at Oxford Brookes University.

She commented: “I’m excited to be working with Gill at Picador and Carolyn at Doubleday and can’t wait for the book to be out in the world. It has always been my dream to write fiction; this book is an emotional story inspired by pollution and climate change, my work as an ecologist and botanist, and by grief and the intense beautiful love of a mother for her child. I hope future readers will feel its resilience and hope.”

Illingworth added: “I’d been looking for an upmarket speculative novel for a long time, and when Not Alone landed in my inbox I knew very quickly I’d found what I’d been waiting so long for. It’s such a visual, emotive and topical read that I think readers of all genres will identify with and be swept away in. I couldn’t be happier that Sarah has found the perfect home at Picador and Doubleday. Their enthusiasm for this stunning novel has blown us away.”

As pretty much everyone who loves books, or works in books, knows - Harrogate Festival took place this weekend and while some of us had deep FOMO, a faction of DHH did make it up there and while we were there, we had the absolute pleasure of accepting a Theakston Award on behalf of client Brian McGilloway and his incredibly standalone, The Last Crossing.

The Highly Commended Award is the first of its kind at this year's Festival, and we couldn't think of a worthier recipient. Congratulations, Brian!

Pick up your copy here.

To that end, in yesterday's edition of the Sunday Express, a fascinating piece on The Last Crossing, and Brian's initial inspiration for the book, was featured:

"The current boom in Northern Irish crime writing reflects the need for stories to help people come to terms with the Troubles, says award-winning writer Brian McGilloway ... Inspired by the 'Disappeared', those people abducted, murdered and secretly buried by terrorist groups, his latest book opens with a shallow grave and a chilling execution in a Scottish wood.

We discover the impact on teacher-turned-sacristan Tony and co-conspirators Hugh and Karen."

Congratulations to three clients, whose books were published last week:

- The paperback of Adam Hamdy's Red Wolves, the second in his pulse-racing, espionage-based Scott Pearce series

- Girls Who Lie is now out in paperback, and is the second in Eva Björg Ægisdóttir's Scandi-noir Forbidden Iceland crime series featuring Detective Elma

- The debut from Adam Simcox, The Dying Squad, was released in eBook and hardback - a supernatural crime tale, quite unlike anything you've read before...

The next book from People of Abandoned Character author, Clare Whitfield - The Gone and the Forgotten - had its cover revealed last week, courtesy of Goldsboro Books, and it is a veritably beauty:
Picture
Summer, 1993. In the aftermath of her mother's suicide attempt, 16-year-old Prue must spend the summer holidays on a remote island in the Shetlands with her favourite Aunt Ruth and Uncle Archie, a man she's barely met since her aunt married him. Prue hopes to re-establish the relationship, and that her aunt might help her understand some of the parts of the past she has been forbidden to discuss by her mother – including the identity of her father.

Prue soon finds out that her uncle was the only suspect in the disappearance of a local girl some twenty years ago. As she grows closer to him, she learns there are differing views on how the beguiling Evelyn O'Hara disappeared, but is her uncle innocent?

Truth is something Prue has always had a fractured relationship with. A single version of the truth seems impossible for her to lockdown...

The Dying Squad, the aforementioned debut from Adam Simcox and published last week, picked up two fantastic reviews:

"A fascinating debut ... At times evocative of Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series, but without its hardboiled cynicism, this is an impressive and memorable debut."
Crime Time

"Witty, intense and addictive."
Scottish Sun

Also given a brilliant quote this week, was Carys Jones' forthcoming We Are All Liars (September 2021, Orion):

"A twisty thriller full of tension and intrigue."
Vikki Patis, author of The Dark

We cannot wait for this fantastic book - perfect for fans of Ruth Ware and Lucy Foley - to hit shelves later this year, and you can pre-order your copy here.

And finally, the cover for Death at the Old Asylum, the long-awaited next installment of Adrian Magson's Inspector Lucas Rocco series, was revealed last week. To read more, scroll down...
Picture
Picardie, 1964. On a deserted country road, three Moroccan nationals are shot dead with precision, a cold-blooded execution, one bullet each. To Inspector Lucas Rocco, it's a mystery. Why them and why here?

A short time later, he happens upon two police officers who have been assaulted by an enraged motorist, one of them seriously. The unapologetic assailant, found to have an unregistered gun in his possession, claims to be the secretary of a high-profile and influential Parisian lawyer, Guy De Lancourt.

The two cases seemingly have nothing in common. But on closer examination Rocco feels something isn't quite right. Just what lies beneath De Lancourt's carefully-cultivated public persona? And what secrets are hidden at Les Cyprès, the heavily-guarded former mental asylum De Lancourt has made his home?

Happy Publication Day to Andrew Swanston for Chaos, which was released last week in paperback.

February 1574.
Winter holds London in its icy grasp, but the city is also caught in a fervour of paranoia, superstition and rumour. Mob violence is commonplace. A whispered word is all it takes to condemn a woman to burn as a witch.

Following his success in foiling the ‘Incendium’ plot against the queen, Dr Christopher Radcliff’s standing within court is high. However, he has no time to reap any rewards. Counterfeit coins are circulating on London’s streets, bearing the likeness of his master, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. This in itself is a treasonous offence, but slogans have also begun to appear. Daubed on walls and doorways, they suggest that someone close to the queen harbours treacherous intent – none other than Leicester himself...

So Radcliff and his team of informants and amateur spies are sent out into the city’s markets, drinking dens and brothels to track down who might be behind such outrageous and subversive acts. The investigation will lead them down a murderous path to face an elusive foe with an extraordinary agenda. And time is running out: for when rumour and fear catch fire, then surely violent insurrection and bloody chaos will follow.

Also published last week, was The Keeper of Songs, the new book from the award-winning author of Lady of the Butterflies and Bloodline, Fiona Mountain.

1967. Enigmatic young folk singer Molly Marrison disappears on the cusp of fame.2002: Silva is working as a housemaid at Chatsworth House when her father suddenly dies, leaving her with one instruction - find Molly.

The only clue is a haunting song, centuries old, that Molly recorded before she vanished. Silva needs the help of song collector, Robbie Nightingale. Silva and Robbie were teenage sweethearts, but they’ve not spoken for decades. If they try to find Molly, what else will they discover? For Molly is not the only girl to have disappeared. Silva’s mother, Sukey, vanished when Silva was a child, leaving her with scars that Robbie once tried but failed to heal.
