The next Naija-set thriller starring psychologist Philip Taiwo, Gaslight by Femi Kayode (Bloomsbury Raven, November '23), was spotlighted in The Bookseller last week, as one of their crime & thriller picks:

"I loved Kayode's first Philip Taiwo novel, Lightseekers, and it was picked as a Book of the Month by The Times, Sunday Times, Independent, Guardian, Observer, Financial Times and Irish Times. In this second, the investigative psychologist is asked to clear the name of a bishop accused of murdering his wife - the "First Lady" of a Nigerian mega-church. Also revealed last week was the cover for Lucy Fulford's debut non-fiction, The Exiled:
Picture
Uganda, August 1972. President Idi Amin makes a shocking pronouncement - the country's South Asian population is being expelled. They have ninety days to leave.

After packing scant possessions and countless memories, 50,000 Ugandan Asians vied for limited space in countries including Canada, India and the United Kingdom. More than 28,000 expellees from Britain's former colony arrived in the UK and began building new lives - but their incredible stories have, until now, remained largely hidden.

Fifty years on from the exodus, The Exiled draws on first-hand interviews and testimonies, including from the author's family, to illuminate a time of painful alienation and incredible courage. As an entire people stepped into the unknown, a global diaspora was born, and the fate of the United Kingdom changed forever.

Journeying across continents and decades, this staggering work of reportage illuminates an essential, and under-explored, chapter in post-colonial history, challenging politically expedient narratives to uncover the true fate of minorities at the end of empire.

The forthcoming debut novel from Gareth Brown, The Book of Doors, has received its first endorsement from Sunday Times bestselling author, Sunyi Dean (The Book Eaters):

"A brilliant page turner. A clever and beautiful novel about the power of books, and a tribute to those who champion them."

The first of two cover reveals this week: Nothing Serious is the debut from Emma Medrano, a blistering novel of self-acceptance, friendship and finding a connection in the most unlikely places ... Out January 2024!

Nicki and Amber quickly 'match', and very soon this unlikely connection turns into the validation they're both looking for.

But when one person is not who they say they are, how long can that last?

Both Phillipa Ashley and Mandy Robotham have pieces in My Weekly and Prima magazines, respectively this week.

Phillipa's short story Hall of Mirrors, appears in My Weekly, while Mandy's Prima feature focuses on female spies throughout history.

The cover for Jo Thomas' new Christmas novel, Countdown to Christmas, was revealed over the weekend:
Picture
Chloe can't wait for Christmas . . . to be over! Her son Ruben is staying with his dad this year and Chloe is planning to ignore the holidays all together. Her only nod to the season is the advent calendar Ruben left her, to help count down the days till he's home again.

But then an heir hunter gets in touch, telling her there's a plot of land in Canada she may be entitled to. Surely, it's a scam. Or could it be just the escape she needs right now? They're offering to pay for her flights . . . and Ruben's latest note in the advent calendar tells her to 'say yes!'

Suddenly, Chloe's new countdown to Christmas involves a log cabin in the middle of a snowy forest, a community that's worried for its future, a gruff lumberjack who gives her butterflies and a lot of pancakes with maple syrup . . .

This Christmas is full of surprises!

The book will be released in eBook in September, and the following month in paperback.

Orenda Books' Karen Sullivan has bought World English Language rights to the next book from The Spirit Engineer author, A. J. West, Mollies, in a deal negotiated by David Headley. The book is slated for hardback publication in June 2024.

Mollies is set amidst the hidden world of Georgian London’s gay scene; Gabriel Griffin must uncover a traitor while risking his life in the most dangerous of ways: by falling in love.

London, 1720. Grieving husband and father Gabriel Griffin lives a double life: ordinary carpenter by day, Lotty the giant molly in London by night. But when he falls for mysterious new arrival Thomas Wright, the danger becomes all too real. Someone is giving away the mollies’ secrets, and it’s down to Gabriel to unmask the traitor before they all hang.
Sullivan said: "We are absolutely thrilled to sign the inimitable A J West's gritty, visceral, and immensely moving new historical thriller, Mollies. This is a bold book – timely, sensitive and vibrant – and exactly what we would expect from one of historical fiction's most talented and engaging new authors. [This is] a breathtaking achievement that will appeal to so many readers."

West added: "I'm so proud to have found such a bold and brilliant publisher for this story of forbidden love amidst extraordinary danger. Researching the real lives of London's gay men - known then as mollies - was a privilege. They were, against all odds and against society, true to themselves. I hope, with support from my amazing agent David Headley, that I've done them justice."

Ashley moves from Avon to Century with four-book deal

Phillipa Ashley, author of uplifting romantic fiction, has moved from Avon to Century with a new four-book deal.

Editorial director Katie Loughnane acquired world English rights from Broo Doherty. The first novel, Second Chance Summer, will be published in June 2024.

It tells the story of Lily Harper, who is spending the summer at a remote retreat on the breath-taking Scilly Isles but is itching to get back to civilisation – and her business. Slowing down simply isn’t in Lily’s vocabulary, and so she quickly clashes with the gorgeous but dour Sam who runs the retreat.

Just as Lily is about to give up and leave, she is involved in a spectacular boating accident. Rumours abound and her obituary is released online. But there are two problems: one, Lily doesn’t like the person she’s reading about; and two, Lily is very much alive and well. Faced with her own mortality, Lily is no longer sure she wants to return to the life she thought she loved. But will she have the courage to give the retreat, and Sam, a second chance?

Ashley said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be embarking on this new stage of my career with Katie and the Century team. Their vibrant and exciting new plans for my work blew me away. I can’t wait to share Second Chance Summer with my wonderfully loyal readers and many new ones.”

Loughnane commented: “I love nothing more than curling up with a Phillipa Ashley novel and knowing that my next escape is just a page away. Phillipa writes warm, uplifting, feel-good stories that have captured the hearts of millions of readers to date, and we have ambitious plans to connect her with many, many more. We feel incredibly lucky that Phillipa has chosen Century as her publisher and I am looking forward to what this new chapter will bring as she enters the next phase of growth in her career.”

Doherty added: “I am thrilled that Century are going to be publishing Phillipa in the future. From the first moment we met the team we were both bowled over by their enthusiasm and ideas for taking Phillipa to the next level and I know with their professionalism and drive she will become a household name. The next few years are going to be incredibly exciting.”
