Orbit UK has pre-empted a debut epic fantasy trilogy by British author Richard Swan in a six-figure deal.

Editor James Long pre-emptively acquired world rights in a three-book deal agreed with Harry Illingworth at the D H H Literary Agency. Orbit UK will publish alongside sister imprint Orbit US as a "major" global launch with a co-ordinated campaign, with the first book in the Empire of the Wolf series scheduled for spring 2022. German rights have been pre-empted by Piper.

The Empire of the Wolf trilogy centres around Sir Konrad Vonvalt, who the synopsis describes as "an 'Emperor's Justice' ... a detective, judge and executioner rolled into one. Vonvalt travels the Empire investigating crimes and dispensing justice, but when he investigates the murder of a noblewoman, Vonvalt uncovers a plot that threatens to bring down the entire empire."

Long called it "exceptional". "Sir Konrad Vonvalt is a captivating and unconventional fantasy hero – think Shardlake and the Witcher rolled into one," he said. "The narrative voice drew me in immediately and I was gripped by the authenticity of Richard’s world-building and how the central mystery snowballs to truly empire-shattering stakes. Intrigue, action and magic combine to deliver a truly memorable reading experience. I’m thrilled to welcome Richard to Orbit."

Swan said: "Having grown up obsessed with Iain M Banks’ Culture series, being published by Orbit has, since my early teens, been a long-held ambition of mine. To see that ambition realised so fully is absolutely exhilarating, and I am tremendously grateful to my agent, Harry Illingworth, and the Orbit team for their vote of confidence in the trilogy."

Illingworth said: "Sir Konrad Vonvalt is one of the most interesting characters I’ve read in a fantasy novel for quite some time and I was hooked within a few pages of starting this smart novel. I couldn’t be more pleased that Rich’s trilogy has found the perfect home at Orbit. Its energy and excitement on both sides of the Atlantic made the decision a no brainer, and I’ve not doubt that Rich’s fantasy writing career is going to be launched in style."

The second book from Stuart Turton, The Devil and the Dark Water, has landed straight in at no.4 in the Sunday Times bestseller list & we couldn't be more delighted.

Along the way, the book picked up the following glowing reviews:

"Turton has fantastic time laying out the details of his intricate plot, leaving the reader wondering if it is something human or supernatural causing the devilry on the Saardam." The Observer New Review

"A rollicking tale of devils, lepers and witchfinders." Irish Times

"An equally expansive and enjoyable convoluted successor - Turton's prose is jaunty and vivis. And unlike most whodunits, I wouldn't recommend it for pre-lights-out reading - not just because of the spooky bits, but because such a lovingly complex construct needs readers who are fully awake." Telegraph

Finally in Devil news, Swedish rights have been sold to Modernista, the very same house to have published Turton's first book, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

Our colleague, Emily Glenister, has been promoted to Associate Literary Agent.

Having joined DHH Literary Agency in 2016 as David Headley's PA, Emily will continue to assist David in the day-to-day running of the agency, but will also be steadily building up a client list of her own.

At the end of last week, Emily took over representation of Reagan Lee Ray, originally taken on by David earlier this year. Of the acquisition, Emily said "After finding [Reagan's] MS alongside David, I have not been able to stop thinking about her haunting and dark debut novel, set in 1930s Bedlam. I am delighted that both David and Reagan have trusted me with representing her going forward."

To find out what Emily is looking for, and to see how to submit your work to her, click here.

Czech Republic rights for David Fennell's forthcoming crime thriller, The Art of Death, have been sold to Dobrovsky.

The book is the first in a series starring DI Grace Archer. When an underground artist leaves three glass cabinets in Trafalgar Square that contain a gruesome installation: the corpses of three homeless men. What then follows is a race against time to find the faceless killer before he strikes again. He is creating a masterpiece, and she will be the star of his show...

We're always thrilled to see our clients' books talked about in print media and last week, Mandy Robotham's forthcoming The Berlin Girl, was included in The Bookseller's roundup.

Mandy is the bestselling author of The German Midwife, and her latest book is an entirely heart-wrenching and moving story, set in 1938 Berlin, of a country on the brink of war, a woman who puts herself in the line of fire, and a world about to be forever changed.

Ragnar Jónasson's next Ari Thor book, Winterkill, was published in Iceland last week. The book is the sixth in the Dark Iceland series, following Snowblind, Nightblind, Blackout, Rupture and Whiteout.

On its publication, Winterkill picked up a brilliant review in one of Iceland's leading newspapers: "Ragnar’s best crime novel to date. Not only a crime novel, but also a family story, a story of love, expectations and desires ... and the twist in the tale is Ragnar’s skill in leading readers astray."

The Puppet Show by M. W. Craven has had Bengali rights sold to Chirkut Publishers. This makes the 19th territory the book has sold in and we couldn't be more delighted for Washington Poe, the caustic hero of Craven's supremely popular crime series. The book is the first in the series, with Black Summer and The Curator following.

The cover for Jules Wake's next book, The Spark, has been revealed and it is a thing of BEAUTY.

Jess is falling for Sam.

Sam is falling for Jess.

But it seems life will do whatever it takes to make them fall apart.

Is love at first sight enough?

The eBook is due for release on 11th December, and the paperback will follow on 4th March 2021.

Finally, we will be throwing open our doors once again for Pitch DHH and this time, we're going virtual!

Ordinarily, we'd be getting ready to go back out on the road (our previous Pitch DHH sessions have taken us to venues around London, and in York and Liverpool). However, thanks to the current situation, we're unable to do that. However, we aren't going to let a little thing like a pandemic stop us from finding hidden talent.

We will be holding a virtual Pitch DHH session on Friday 4th December. These one-on-ones will take place via the medium of Zoom / Skype or Microsoft Teams (whichever is mutually agreeable for both the agent and pitcher).

Details on how to submit your work can be found here. We cannot wait to read your work!

Pitch DHH: We're Going Virtual!

10/9/2020

Never let it be said that a pandemic will stop us from discovering new talent. While we may not be able to head back on the road - in the past we have visited venues in London, York and Liverpool - we have decided to throw open Pitch DHH’s doors over the medium of Zoom / Microsoft Teams / Skype.

The session will take place on Friday 4th December. The event is free and each pitcher will have ten minutes with their chosen agent over a digital meeting platform, that is mutually agreed upon by the agent and pitcher prior to the session. The list of pitchers will be decided on based on the strength of their submission.

Below is an idea of what each agent is looking for:

David Headley is actively seeking well-written stories with strong characters and an original narrative voice across general, reading-group and genre fiction with a particular fondness for crime, thrillers, historical and romance.

Broo Doherty is looking for commercial women’s fiction, historical fiction, crime and literary fiction. What really excites her are novels that capture a familiar setting, in an unusual way, or take her to a new unimaginable place in a convincing manner; and if it makes her both smile and wince simultaneously, so much the better.

Hannah Sheppard is looking for middle grade, teen and YA fiction as well as commercial adult fiction (mostly women’s romance / psychological and high concept thrillers). She loves vivid voices, original, hooky pitches and humour - and she’s a sucker for lost, found or misdirected letters. She is actively looking for diverse voices and characters, and thinks we’re all going to need some happy and uplifting stories over the coming months.

Natalie Galustian is looking for compelling narrative non-fiction, literary fiction, short stories and humour.

Harry Illingworth is looking for mould-breaking genre fiction with unique voices and strong concepts; books that can crossover from genre fiction to the commercial market. This could come in the form of epic fantasy, high-concept crime and thriller, anything with a touch of the supernatural or accessible science fiction.

Emily Glenister is looking for reading group and commercial novels, with an emphasis on crime thrillers, upmarket women’s fiction with a unique hook, post-eighteenth century history and gothic novels / ghost stories. Diverse / own voices submissions actively encouraged. As long as the story is strong and the voice distinctive, Emily will keep turning the pages.

How To Apply:
Email pitchdhh@dhhliteraryagency.com with the name of the agent in the subject line of the email, including a cover letter, one-page synopsis / outline and the first three chapters of the novel, or the first 5,000 words (please do not submit more than 5,000 words) if shorter. You may only approach one agent on the team. If these guidelines are not adhered to, unfortunately we cannot consider your submission. We are also not able to consider pitchers who have attended any previous pitching events with us.

Important Dates:
Submissions open: 10am on Monday 12th October
Submissions close: 6pm on Friday 27th November
Please do not submit outside of these dates

We will let everyone know whether or not they have a slot by Wednesday 2nd December.

If you have any questions about this event, please email pitchdhh@dhhliteraryagency.com, but remember - no submissions before 12th October!
