DHH News Roundup 14th - 20th October 2019

We are slowly but surely recovering after one of the busiest weeks in the literary calendar: the Frankfurt Book Fair. It was easily one of the best Fairs we’ve been to in recent years - the atmosphere was fantastic, the book love was palpable and most of all, we absolutely loved talking about our clever clients and their books. Super proud agents!
This week’s news round up starts with the delightful news that Anita Frank’s debut gothic novel The Lost Ones was selected in My Weekly as one of their Best New Books. Obviously, we agree, but more than that, this is the absolute perfect book to curl up with as the days get shorter, the nights get colder and you fancy snuggling down on the sofa with a hauntingly good read.

England 1917

Reeling from the death of her fiancé, Stella Marcham welcomes the opportunity to stay with her pregnant sister, Madeleine, at her imposing country mansion, Greyswick - but she arrives to discover a house of unease and her sister gripped by fear and suspicion.

Before long, strange incidents begin to trouble Stella - sobbing in the night, little footsteps on the stairs - and as events escalate, she finds herself drawn to the tragic history of the house.

Aided by a wounded war veteran, Stella sets about uncovering Greyswick’s dark and terrible secrets - secrets the dead whisper from the other side…

Come on! How can you not want to read this spooky little gem? You can pre-order here - and, just FYI, Goldsboro Books have a gorgeous limited edition with sprayed edges (it’s also the Book of the Month)!

Abi Elphinstone’s upcoming book, The Snow Dragon (illustrated beautifully by Fiona Woodcock) has been given a lovely write-up by Love Reading in their newsletter:

“Not since The Snowman have readers been taken on such a magical, snowy journey of love and adventure. Filled with snowflakes, starlight and revelling in the power of the imagination this is a gorgeous story for Christmas nights and Fiona Woodcock’s illustrations are very special indeed.”

The Snow Dragon will be released on 31st October from Simon & Schuster, and you can pre-order here.

Congratulations to Eva Björg Ægisdóttir whose second book, Girls Who Lie, is at No.1 in her native Iceland.

We couldn’t be happier for this incredibly talented author, whose first book in the UK, The Creak on the Stairs, is due for publication in May 2020.

Also reviewed this week was Samantha Baines’ debut children’s book Harriet Versus the Galaxy.

Love Reading 4 Kids has said: “A humorous, heart-warming intergalactic adventure featuring a hearing aid-wearing heroine and an abundance of aliens… What a sweetly empowering debut.”

Janie Millman stopped by her local E.Leclerc in France to sign copies of the French version of her debut novel, Life’s A Drag - or, we should say, Les Copines d’Abord!

The cover was revealed for Adrian Magson’s Death at the Clos du Lac last week. This is the final title in the Inspector Lucas Rocco series that the Dome Press have reacquired and reissued, with a revised text and brand new cover. It will be released in eBook on 1st November.

The book follows Death on the Marais, Death on the Rive Nord and Death on the Pont Noir.

France, 1964

The man was standing on the bottom of the therapy pool in the Clos du Lac sanitarium , his white cotton shirt billowing out like gossamer in the clear blue water…

At the exclusive Clos du Lac, a man is discovered standing in the therapy pool. But he is not there for his health; someone has chained him to the bottom, and left him to die there slowly.

Inspector Lucas Rocco believes it’s an unusual and elaborate method of execution, but finds that the inhabitants of the Clos du Lac are unwilling to talk. Nobody seems to have heard or seen anything, and the staff are resolutely unhelpful - or dead.

Meanwhile, ministry officials sent from Paris to ‘assist’ in the investigation attempt to impede Rocco’s efforts to find answers. It soon becomes clear the Clos du Lac is no ordinary sanitarium, and holds secrets the authorities feel are better left hidden. And with a high-level kidnapping mounted in an attempt to derail France’s new trade agreements with China, Rocco faces threats from more than one quarter… one of them a rogue government assassin.

Finally, congratulations to Phillipa Ashley - or, we should say, Ashley Croft - who saw the paperback release of The Love Solution last week.

Sisters Sarah and Molly are close, but they couldn’t be more different. Sarah makes jewellery and is obsessed with all things shiny and glam, whilst Molly is most at home in her white coat and goggles, working in a science lab.

When Molly is put on a new assignment, she’s over the moon. It’s an important, top-secret project - and she has a handsome new boss to ogle at when she’s not staring in to a petri dish…
Picture
But when Sarah finds herself on the painful end of a disastrous break-up, no amount of Ben & Jerry’s or trashy rom-coms can cheer her up. She wants to take a more drastic approach to dealing with her heartbreak, and one that only her sister - and perhaps a sprinkle of science can help with…
