Night Shadows, the next in Eva Björg Ægisdóttir's 'Hidden Iceland' series (Orenda Books, July 2022), has been given a fantastic review from The Times:

"Ægisdóttir marshals her huge cast with great skill: none of them — colleagues, relatives, suspects — are mere puppets. She is a master of misdirection and thematic development — babies planned and unplanned play a major role — gradually drawing the many plot strands together in a thrilling climax. Like its predecessors in the Forbidden Iceland series, this is a sad story but a joy to read, even at two in the morning."

With its publication later this week, Victoria Selman's Truly, Darkly, Deeply (Quercus) has been selected as this month's edition of Woman & Home's Book of the Month.

This is a totally unputdownable thriller, that will be on everybody's lips this summer - perfect for fans of Mindhunter and Girl A.

The debut novel from Femi Kayode, Lightseekers (Bloomsbury Raven, February 2021), has been selected as Waterstones' Thriller of the Month for July 2022 (paperback).

Longlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger, this is a masterfully suspenseful novel, introducing investigative psychologist Dr. Philip Taiwo.

Published towards the end of last week in the US, Ragnar Jónasson's recent Outside, has picked up a fantastic review from ABC News:

"Jonasson and translator Victoria Cribb do a fine job of setting the scene, developing the characters, and keeping readers in suspense with a tight, clean, noir prose style."

Congratulations to Caroline Lamond - her new novel, Well Behaved Women (plus one more title), has been snapped up by HarperCollins imprint, One More Chapter.

Well Behaved Women is set in the 1920s, based on the life story of Alla Nazimova, the "founding mother of Sapphic Hollywood". Beginning in 1879 with the birth of Miriam Edez Adelaida Leventon in Yalta, Crimea, the novel tells her story in becoming Nazimova, the "most celebrated film star" of the 1910s. Well Behaved Women also follows Maybelle Crabtree a god-fearing girl from Kentucky who, after being invited to Nazimova’s "Sewing Circle", discovers her sexuality in a world of decadence.

The Botanist, the fifth in M. W. Craven's 'Washington Poe' series, was granted the 'Highly Recommended' honour in CrimeTime over the weekend:

"Craven’s Washington Poe series keeps on getting better and better and this fifth instalment is going to be difficult to top ... The previous volume in the series won Craven a CWA Dagger ; I wouldn’t bet against this new volume reaching the same heights."

Finally, there were cheers heard within a ten-mile radius of the DHH offices when M. W. Craven's Dead Ground was crowned the winner of the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger at last week's CWA Dagger Awards.

Dead Ground, the fourth in the 'Poe' series, was praised by the judges for its complex characters and deftly constructed plot. The panel said: “Once again Craven proves himself the master in the art of writing suspense and action.”
